Neil Young debuted his new album, Prairie Wind, for a live audience at the original Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Oscar-winning director, Jonathan Demme and Neil decided to shoot the show during the two-night run with nine Super 16 cameras, for eventual theatrical release as a feature film.
Producer Ilona Herzberg and cinematographer, Ellen Kuras, ASC, invited Emmy recipient Jeff Ravitz to participate in the project and bring his knowledge of concert lighting for the camera. Ravitz, Kuras, and gaffer John Nadeau employed a complex lighting system, which was a hybrid of the Ryman Auditorium’s in-house equipment combined with automated Vari-Lite fixtures provided by Bandit Lites. Controlling the system was a GrandMA console.
